Lawn to Woodland Ecosystem - Englewood, CO - Summer 2023

Over 2000 sqft of lawn was converted to a woodland ecosystem to provide habitat for birds and pollinators. All plants used in this design are native Colorado species, and many are fruit bearing shrubs such as Western Sandcherry (Prunus besseyi), Golden Currant (Ribes aureum), Three-leaf Sumac (Rhus trilobata), Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), and Wild Plum (Prunus americana). We also provided a shade tolerant grass to provide forage for insects larvae and young birds. The lawn was smothered using recycled cardboard and covered with 4-5″ of mulch. Much of the mulch was produced on-site using a wood chipper and unwated shrubs/trees removed from the front yard.¬†
